How to set up and stop SMS alerts on OPay

Hello guys! In this article, I’m going to walk you through the step by steps processes of enabling SMS alerts on OPay and how to turn it off. But before we dive into that, let’s understand the important of SMS alert in our day-to-day finance and the potential implications.

Why Turn ON SMS Alert on OPAY?

The most important reason SMS alert is enabled on our OPay account is “Security”. When the alert is turned on, it’ll help to detect unauthorized transactions or suspicious activity that happen on the account. In other words, Immediate alerts allow users to act quickly in case of fraud.

Furthermore, alerts let OPay account holders to receive real-time updates on deposits, withdrawals, and payments such as bills. In essence, alert helps users to monitor their spending and account balance.

Why Turn OFF SMS Alert on OPAY?

While many people prefer to receive alerts on everything that happens on their OPay account, some users prefer to disable it for confidentiality purposes. These users believe that too many alert messages on their phones can be overwhelming, especially for frequent transactions.

However, it’s important to note that OPay charges ₦4 per alert you receive via SMS for each credit alert, withdrawal alert, transfer alerts, and card alerts. This alert fee will be automatically deducted from your OPay balance on the 3rd day of the new month.

For this reason, many prefer to use Email alert and push notifications which doesn’t require a fee. All you need to do is add your email address to your OPay account and enable push notification under settings to start receiving alerts through those mediums.

However, it’s important to understand that receiving email alerts and push notifications will only happens when you have internet connection. This is one of the advantages of SMS alerts over email and push notification alerts

How to Turn ON SMS Alert on OPAY

Follow these steps to enable your OPAY SMS Alert:

  • Login to your OPay account and tap on “ME” tab.
  • Tap on the “Setting Icon” at the top-right corner of the “ME” page.
  • Scroll down and tap on “SMS Alert Subscription”.
  • Select your prefer option e.g “Credit Alert”, Transfer and Withdrawal Alert, and Card Alert.
  • Tap on “Subscribe Now” and accept the terms and conditions of paying N4 per SMS alert.

Once the SMS alert is activated, you will start receiving alerts on your phone and be charged per SMS alert you receive.

How to Turn OFF SMS Alert on OPAY

If you know how to turn ON the SMS alert, then you should know how to turn it back OFF because it’s the same process. All you have to do is go-to “SMS Alert Subscription” service under “Settings” in your OPAY app and Turn OFF the Alert Notification.

However, for the sake of users that don’t know how to enable the SMS alerts on OPay, let’s break the turning OFF down. Follow these steps to simply turn OFF your SMS alerts on OPAY:

  • Open your OPAY App and tap on “Me” tab under your dashboard.
  • Tap on the “Settings Icon” at the top-right corner of the “Me” page.
  • Scroll down and tap on “SMS Alert Subscription” and Turn it OFF.

Note that immediately you deactivated the OPAY SMS Alert, you will stop receiving SMS alert via message and your account will not be charged for N4 per alert again.
