The largest telecommunication service provider in Nigeria, MTN, has implemented a price increase to its data services in the country. The company announced this on its X page, citing that the price has be adjusted to better enhances its services and serve customers better.
The data price increment came in after the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a tariff increase for telecommunications companies in Nigeria.
The telecom companies seek permission from the NCC to increase price 100% so that they can earn more revenue in order to cover rising costs. However, NCC only approved 50% increase for the telecommunication companies.
In alliance with the approval, we’ve discovered that MTN has increased its data plan prices by 200%. Before, you could get 15GB for N2,000, but now it costs N6,000. The biggest plan, 1.5TB, used to be N150,000, but now it’s N240,000. Other plans have also changed: the 100GB plan now gives only 90GB and costs N25,000 instead of N20,000. The 600GB plan has been reduced to 480GB and now costs N120,000 instead of N75,000.
The data price increase has sparked many reactions on several social media platforms. An X, formerly Twitter, criticizes and said “what sort of outrageous increase is that?... Just making sure the masses suffer more.”
Nigerians have been living with high inflation rate for more than three straight years. Hiking price of any commodities now will add to their struggles. In fact, many will not be able to make ends meet.
However, it worth noting that it’s not only MTN that has increased data price in Nigeria, other telecommunication companies including Airtel Nigeria and Globacom have also hiked their data services prices.
